The Fifth Doctor, relaxing with his companions at the Eye of Orion, starts to fade in and out of reality as his former incarnations are pulled from their time streams. With the Fourth Doctor trapped, the First, Second and Third Doctors are drawn to the forbidden Death Zone on Gallifrey. They are soon joined there by the Fifth Doctor in the TARDIS, and journey onwards to the Dark Tower at the heart of the Death Zone. On the way they encounter some of their deadliest foes, including a lone Dalek, roaming Cyber Squads and the Master, all illegally brought by Time Scoop to the Death Zone to compete in the Game of Rassilon. When the Fifth Doctor evades a group of Cybermen and teleports to the Capitol, he uncovers evidence that President Borusa is the arch villain embroiled in a race to win the game and obtain true immortality.
BEHIND THE SCENES
Studio sessions for the anniversary extravaganza got underway in March 1983 and included scenes involving the single Dalek prop used in this story.
Original prop Dalek One-7 was selected for the part and some significant 'visual' modifications were made. The dome lights were now large wide grey dial style disks with red lenses, the eyestalk was moved backwards and the pivot slot filled so the eye could no longer look down as much.
Though well intended the refurbishment did little to enhance the prop and overall it had a dishevelled appearance. It was clear that the shoulders were badly painted and silver could still be seen all the way around the lower section. All in all the prop was a visual mess of parts but, arguably, because of the unique look of this prop and its solo appearance with the First Doctor, this time played by veteran actor William Hurndall, it had an impact that remains to this day with its slightly darker grey blue livery, lifted neck bin and the higher stance.
